Evaluate and gauge seniors’ awareness of life settlements as a viable product for retirement planning, and analyze how those perceptions have been influenced through various media publications available to consumers over the past 4-5 years. ISI is concerned that many seniors are not aware that life settlements may be an option to provide additional funding for retirement in amounts greater than surrendering a life insurance policy. Many sources of media appear to misunderstand the basic fundamentals of life settlements and may be influencing the public through faulty reporting.

The Insurance Studies Institute (“ISI”) hosted its first Insurance Concepts Forum in April 2009, and participants included twenty seven leaders from academia, government, investment sectors, and the life settlement industry. This dynamic group spent two days discussing numerous topics, with a focus on the “Institutionalization of the Life Insurance Secondary Market.” Spirited dialogue sparked several initiatives, including a draft proposal for an industry standards board, considerations toward an industry?wide marketing campaign, research of catastrophic risk management, and development of future forums with targeted themes. Recently released survey data from a poll of those aged 62 or older by senior financial resource Golden Gateway Financial and the Insurance Studies Institute showed that a majority of these individuals are in a position to immediately benefit from life insurance policies that they currently own but no longer need.
